What Are YouTube Tags?

YouTube tags are descriptive keywords stored with a video's metadata. They can clarify names and common misspellings, but YouTube says tags otherwise play a minimal role in discovery.

The priority order

Work on the viewer-facing promise first

YouTube identifies the title, thumbnail, and description as more important discovery metadata because those elements help viewers decide whether to watch. Its current creator guidance also frames performance around appeal, engagement, and satisfaction—not a tag-count target.

A complete tag field cannot rescue a video that makes an unclear promise or disappoints viewers after the click. Treat tags as cleanup metadata after the topic, packaging, description, and opening are accurate.

Useful cases

When a tag is worth adding

A person, product, or place has a common misspelling.
An acronym and its expanded phrase both identify the subject.
A technical term has an accepted alternate spelling or spacing.
The video uses a precise series or event name that belongs in its metadata.

YouTube does not publish a recommended number of tags. Add the relevant variants you can defend, then stop. Do not add unrelated popular topics, and do not paste a block of tags into the description.

Example

A focused tag set

For a tutorial titled “How to Calibrate a Bambu Lab A1 Mini,” useful candidates might include the full product name, “A1 Mini,” and a real misspelling you found in audience questions. “Viral video,” “trending,” and unrelated printer brands do not describe that tutorial and should be removed.

The Data API documents a 500-character maximum for the complete tag list, including separators and special counting rules for phrases with spaces. That is a ceiling, not a target.
